Abattoir (2000)

Drawing (charcoal on paper); 22" x 30"

We aspiring artists in Daniel Dove's intermediate drawing class at UT-Austin only had four assignments to prove our mettle, and my first two had not gone over well with the class, despite a relatively successful track record in my wake heading in to this class. Knowing I needed to turn my bad fortune around stat, desperate measures were called for.

The parameters of the third assignment called for a central subject matter to be obstructed by an object or form in the foreground. After ten or so unsuccessful sketches and with only one class period to spare before the deadline, I whipped out a spontaneous sketch inspired by fascination with geometric shapes and grids, which ultimately led to the finished product. The class went wild over it, signaling my redemption. The realist-abstract hybrid model I used in "abattoir" would return in later paintings.

A family friend later commented that this drawing made him think of the apocalypse. Let's not get crazy here, folks.
