City tonight (2000)

Collage (mixed media, mostly charcoal, on paper); 40" x 30"

Being a city slicker, I've always had a soft spot for all things architectural, be they old and decrepit or modern and industrial. They all have character. I had made several attempts throughout college to compose a city montage of sorts that depicted my urban fetish, all falling short of my expectations. This assignment, however, found different results. I was somewhat influenced my M.C. Escher but shied away from playing as many mind games with the onlooker as he did. In the end, we have ourselves a tunnel of sorts, whose entrance is formed by the interection of the two traffic light poles in the foreground and whose exit is the pseudo-Doric columns. I like to think I still pull a few Escher-type punches through incongruous perspectives of variously composited buildings and structures, but you be the judge. Revisited in 2010.
