Lady in Red (2000)

Drawing (conte on paper); 24" x 36"

The assignment: "Go crazy. You have 15 minutes."

Although I prefer to take my time with any piece of art I do, I was forced to leave my comfort zone on this piece. It was arguably my best drawing among all that I did during my college studio courses -- and it took the least time. This was perhaps the most stunning revelation as an art student: more time spent on a piece does necessarly equate to more success (unlike, say, a term paper).

Matisse was known for making thousands of lighting-fast drawings. His goal was that through repetition, his instinct and analytic abilities would become one. Like a martial arts expert, he would simply act and react without thinking, his technique increasinly ingrained.
