Plant in doorway (2002)

Painting (oil on canvas); 6" x 12"

The original assignment was to paint a still life in black and white, a crime if there ever was one when it comes to paint. A general rule of thumb, at least as far as I'm concerned, is that paint was made for using color; drawings, in which different colored pigments don't mix so well, are best suited for black and white. Just a personal preference. A preference validated when I decided to overlay the original assignment with color, which proved much more fruitful.

Even when I was done, I still wasn't crazy about it, so I gave it to my roommate as a college graduation present. But then my stepmother told me she liked it, which put me in a bit of a pickle. My paintings are like my children -- even the unsightly ones can't be given up for adoption easily. I decided to "forget" to remind my roommate to take "Plant in doorway," still hanging on the wall alongside some of my other works, with her when it was time to move out. To make a long story short, it currently hangs in my stepmom's house.
