Shoreline (2002)

Painting (oil, acrylic on canvas); 16" x 12"

This be a still life, in case you couldn't already tell. Cropping the sandollar in the upper righthand corner was intentional -- as if to "tease" the viewer with what the rest of that shell must look like. Activating the beholder's imagination -- as in any good book or movie -- is key to a work of art. Being predictable, not so much.

The assignment was to use a pair of complimentary colors -- in this case, blue and orange -- and only those colors. So that's what I did. While I was at it, I took advantage of those colors to depict the table and blue background -- a surreal kind of shoreline, as it were.
